E-CR GLASS versus E GLASS:

The trend towards commercial production of boron-free glass fibers commenced in the late 1970’s and early 80’s, but it was only in the late 1990’s that more companies ventured into large scale production at different locations around the world.  Glass fibers devoid of boron and added fluorine are now a commercial reality thanks to advances in glass and sizing chemistry and manufacturing process improvements.  These fibers perform on par or better than conventional boron-based “E” glass fibers in reinforcing plastics.

“E-CR” glass is a range of formulas developed in Canada by OCF and also used in several other Countries and “E-CR” contains no boron or fluorine compounds.  It is basically an “E” glass with much better “chemical resistance” properties and thus “CR” is a key part of its name designation.  This composition was used in Canada for twenty-five (25) years and did not require any pollution control equipment to clean the furnace flue gases.   The high capital cost of waste gas cleaning equipment can be eliminated.  The finished glass fiber properties, however, are very similar to those of boron and fluorine containing “E” glasses and in the case of resistance to chemical attack, much better.  Special raw materials are used and some modifications to processing equipment are required.

Glass Strand will supply to others the “E-CR” formula and a furnace design capable of efficiently melting the same.  Since there are a series of “E-CR” glass formulas known and tested over the years, Glass Strand can provide the custom process necessary.   Glass Strand certifies that the particulate emissions will be as low as the levels tested at the Fiberglas Canada Facility.
